An innovative building in a historic precinct, this library includes gallery, cafe and multipurpose areas. Since the 1930s Eltham has developed a vibrant artistic and cultural community, with a strong environmental focus. The design of the building celebrates this spirit with extensive use of natural materials, low energy consumption and its sympathetic response to people and the environment. The Eltham Library is an icon for Nillumbik Council and is under a Heritage Overlay in recognition of its outstanding value to the local community. Gregory Burgess Architects later developed the design to suit future trends in service delivery and create a children’s activity area.
